CHAPTER 15

First thing in the morning, I called Darlene and she agreed to a meeting later in the day. I made good time on the drive to Henry’s, complete with a container of Chloe’s cinnamon apple fritters. As I drove, aside from appreciating the colors of fall, I contemplated all my questions and how to slide them into the conversations, rather than interrogating these people.

Henry was playing with Taffy when I arrived. He ate one of the fritters and grinned. “This is good but this is neither Italian nor healthy.”

“You’re right on both counts. When she bakes at home, she rarely does Italian pastries unless she’s trying something new. Like the Italian version of French toast, pan dulcis. She made those at home and brought them in for us to taste. Fried dough with a sugar glaze? Even with the apple pieces, not the healthiest of breakfasts. But, oh so yummy.”

He laughed and moved the container of goodies to a counter. “Too tempting. Let’s go.”

I followed him out and waited until we were on the road to ask a question. “Did you check with Lucci and see if she had any ideas?”

“I did. She couldn’t find anything on Leo or Darlene or Lashley either. Lashley at least has a physical address and owns property. That made her suspicious. Did you ever hear from Crawford?”

“Not yet. I figure if I don’t hear from her soon, I’ll call and update her first. Then slip in the questions about those two incidents and ask about his keys.”

“They would keep them until they were sure the initial search was complete and they didn’t miss something. Checking out his computer must be a nightmare.”

“I’m wondering if whoever killed him took the house key and office key. That would explain someone being able to get into their townhome. I didn’t think to ask about his office when we were there.”

“The question is still ‘why?’ What were they looking for?”

“That I don’t know.”

“Have you heard anything from Brook?”

“Not directly. Doug came in the other day. He couldn’t believe we fired her. Chloe told him she didn’t want to work at Cenare because there were too many changes. He countered with ‘she hoped you’d try to convince her to stay.’ He left after that with a to-go box for the two of them.”

“Too bad. She’s going to be very lonely staying at home and not even visiting at lunch. We’re almost there. You have a game plan?”

“Besides a cup of coffee? My usual human interest spiel and cooperating with the police. Then some of the same questions they already answered. Other than that, did they know why Darlene and Cliff chose to live in Blumfield. I may make a comment about the wedding and see what they say.”

“Any special reason?”

“Nothing on social media from any family member, either side. Don’t let me forget to ask about the quotes. Dr. Steele hinted the wedding and the move were quick decisions. Maybe they were, maybe they weren’t.”

“No kids, right? A pregnancy can prompt a quick wedding.
